King Mohg the Fourth

The Origin of King Mohg the Fourth

No one noticed the exact moment Mohg became king.

The crown was placed carefully upon his head. The court held its breath.

Mohg sneezed.

Then—before anyone could announce anything—he leapt down from the throne and ran.

He ran to the guards first. Then the scribes. Then the startled ambassador, who was greeted with three kisses and a tail wag so earnest it knocked over a chair.

The court erupted.

“Your Majesty!”
“Protocol!”
“Please stop licking the treaties!”

Mohg did not stop.

He had waited long enough.

By midday, every person in the palace had been greeted personally. By sunset, the gates were open. By morning, the people of Bleb understood:

This king would not rule from above.

He would rule among. And the crown—slightly crooked now—never sat straighter.
