Excerpt from the Diary of Thomas of the Third House

Human Butler, Kingdom of Bleb
Day 3

I believe it is important to keep records, if only so someone understands what happened to me.

Morning:
Awoke at dawn because someone was standing on my chest. Not aggressively. More… expectantly. I was informed (by staring) that it was time for breakfast. I made eggs. One fell. This was apparently correct.

Midmorning:
Swept the floor while being followed closely by the smaller one, who attempted to fight the broom. I apologized to both.

Afternoon:
Laundry. Folded carefully. Unfolded immediately. Refolded under supervision. The larger one approved by sitting directly on the warm pile. I did not argue.

Late Afternoon:
Was instructed (again by staring) to sit on the couch. Sat incorrectly at first. Corrected by gentle pressure. Remained still for forty-seven minutes. Learned many things about breathing.

Evening:
Prepared stew. Was told “good human” for stirring. I will carry this praise with me forever.

Night:
I am writing this with one hand. The other is unavailable. Both dogs are asleep on me. I am pinned, but not unhappy.

I miss my old life occasionally—my freedom, my shoes, my sense of direction.

But today, while the smaller one sighed and adjusted its head against my arm, I realized something important:

No one has ever trusted me this much before.

If this is service, it is the gentlest kind.
If this is captivity, I hope the door stays closed.

I will stop writing now.
They are dreaming.
