How Echoes Were Made

Mohg likes to know where he is.

Not because he is worried.
Just because it helps him settle.

When he enters a new place,
especially one that feels very large,
he announces himself.

A bark.
Not loud.
Just enough.

The sound runs ahead of him.
It moves faster than he does.
It touches the walls.
It checks the edges.

It finds out how far the place goes.

Then it comes back.

When the sound returns, Mohg knows.
This place is wide.
This place is deep.
This place can hold him.

He feels better after that.

So now, when someone calls out into a big, empty place
and hears their voice come back,
it is not the place answering.

It is the sound returning with information.

It is saying,
You fit here.
There is room.

Pebble does not wait for echoes.
She has already crossed the space
before the sound finishes its work.

Mohg listens until the answer arrives.

That is why echoes repeat what you say.

They are checking the size of things
and reporting back.
