Pebble Tests the Curtain

The curtain moved on its own.

This was unacceptable.

Pebble noticed immediately. Curtains were not supposed to have opinions. They were meant to hang, still and obedient, occasionally participating in light. Movement implied intent.

Pebble barked once to establish authority.

The curtain continued moving.

Pebble intervened.

She leapt forward and grabbed the edge of the fabric, pulling it decisively toward the wall. The curtain resisted slightly, then complied. Pebble stood back and watched.

The curtain moved again.

This felt personal.

Pebble barked louder and attacked the problem directly. She tugged. She shook. She reasserted the curtain’s correct position with her entire body.

The curtain persisted.

It billowed gently, as though unconcerned with Pebble’s efforts.

Mohg arrived and lay down nearby.

He watched the curtain move. He watched Pebble respond. He did not interfere.

This seemed important.

Pebble paused and stared at Mohg.

Mohg did not move.

The curtain continued.

Pebble returned to her work.

She attempted to pin the curtain with one paw. She attempted to hold it still with her mouth. She attempted to sit on it, which felt thorough.

The curtain finished moving.

It settled back into stillness, as though satisfied.

Pebble froze.

She waited for it to start again.

It did not.

Mohg stood, stretched, and lay back down.

The curtain remained calm.

Pebble remained alert.

Whatever the curtain had needed to do, Mohg had allowed it to finish.

Pebble did not like this approach.

But the curtain did not move again.
